Office Hours
The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. In addition,
patients requiring specific treatment may be given a very short appointment on
Saturday
or Sunday morning. After hours and on weekends, one of our doctors is always
available and on call. If you need to speak to the doctor, simply call (203)
325-2695.
The answering service will take your message and telephone number. We make every
effort to return calls promptly. In the event you do not receive a call back
within 30 minutes, please inform the answering service.
Check In
As you enter the Bennett Cancer Center on the ground floor, you will usually be
greeted by one of several friendly volunteers who staff the registration desk.
They will check you in for your appointment — and probably offer you a cookie or
a rose. When they enter your name in the computer, this notifies the lab of your
arrival, and you do not need to check in again with the desk
upstairs. If your appointment is very early in the morning before a volunteer is
present, please go directly to the Hematology Oncology, P.C. front desk on the
first floor for check in. The elevator will ring you to the first floor, where
you can pick up your e/Tablet and be ready for your visit to the lab.
Waiting Area
While in our waiting room, you will see and meet a variety of individuals: young
and elderly, some here for their first visit, some currently receiving
chemotherapy, some not feeling well, and some wonderfully healthy who are here
for their “follow up” visits, perhaps years after their therapy.
Our staff makes every effort to provide a comfortable and pleasant space, and to
minimize your waiting time. If, after completing the e/Tablet and lab work, you have waited
more than 15 minutes, please feel comfortable asking our front desk staff to
verify that you have been properly checked in. At times, there may be an
extended delay because of unexpected medical needs of patients. However, it is
always okay to ask about a delay.
We are respectful of your time and will always
do our best to keep your appointments as scheduled. At the same time, an equal
priority is to give each patient the time necessary to meet their needs.
Treatment Area
Patients receiving intravenous therapies may be assigned to various rooms for
treatment.
We encourage you to bring family members with you if you care to, and any
personal
items that will help you to be comfortable. We have tea, coffee, and juice
available. You
may bring food that you desire; we ask that food not have strong smells, since
this might
be difficult for other patients. On occasion, volunteers are available to
purchase food for
you from the cafeteria. The staff will do everything possible to make your
experience as
personal and easy as possible.
You will always first meet with one of the oncology nurses, who will review your
blood
counts, discuss any concerns or questions you might have, and assure your
readiness to
receive the treatment your oncologist has prescribed. After starting the IV
line, you
might then remain in the Exam Room (if treatment is brief), or be moved to a
chair in
the group room or in one of the single rooms. The type of room set aside for you
depends on your individual medical needs, the specific requirements of your
treatment,
and room availability.
Check Out
When you finish your appointment with your physician or nurse, you will always
be given a blue slip to take to the front desk, where your return visits will be
scheduled. You will be given an appointment card with your scheduled time and the reason
for
your visit.
If it after 5:00 PM and there is no-one at the front desk, please place your
blue slip in the container on the ledge. You will be called the next day to
schedule any necessary appointments.
